A Historic, Precious, and Strategic Month for Leadership Resources

Dear Partners & Friends,

This month is historic, strategic, and precious for Leadership Resources. Our team will participate in the Global Proclamation Congress of Pastoral Trainers in Bangkok, Thailand.

Thousands of pastoral trainers from 100+ nations will gather June 15-22 to fellowship, grow, and network to advance Christ’s Great Commission.

Here’s why I think it will be….

Global Proclamation CongressHistoric

An event of this scale and focus has never before happened.

Precious

Forty key men we have trained from twenty-one countries are coming….the first time such an important cross-sampling of LRI’s ministry will be in one place at the same time. These dear men are the “cream of the crop”…the most effective pastor-trainers we know. We believe this Congress will build deeply into their lives and ministries of these men whom we treasure. And, they will learn from one another and see & hear the worldwide impact our ministry is having.

Strategic

We’ve been invited to help shape the program. The Congress will emphasize the faithful teaching & preaching of God’s Word, in part, through morning expositions of 2 Timothy, a book with the theme of not giving up in the ministry of the Word—a needed message for all in attendance!

We will also host the conference track on Biblical Engagement. This more intimate environment will foster discussions on achieving true biblical transformation and how to launch movements of God’s Word.

Untitled1

Join us!

It’s too late for you to fly to Bangkok, but here are two specific ways you can partner with us in this Congress:

  1. Pray with us. Specifically, you can pray for:
  • Christ to be exalted and our understanding of his glorious Kingdom deepened
  • Safety and fruit for 65 LRI Staff and MTers attending from 21 different countries
  • Travel and visa mercies. (This has already caused some many headaches!)
  • Pre-conference fellowship of LRI leaders
  • Conference to fuel pastoral training movements around the Word
  • Our workshop track “Biblical Engagement as Foundation for Pastoral Training”
  • Divine connections with future partners to further God’s Kingdom work.
  • Spiritual growth and missional innovation for all in attendance
  • Pray that the message of 2 Timothy would encourage and convict
  • Trainers to commit to train 100,000 pastors in next 10 years
  1. Partner with us financially.

Sending so many pastoral trainers to Thailand is not cheap! We estimate that our cost will be $100,000 to cover airfare, registration, lodging, and more. But this is a small price to pay for what we are estimating will be one of the most impactful weeks in Leadership Resources’ history!

The fact that any of this is possible is a testimony to the grace of Christ and His faithfulness to build His church though the faithful ministry of the Word.

Thank you for the precious part you have played in this ministry!

What One Global Leader Thinks about LRI:

Ramesh Richard DTSDr. Ramesh Richard is the Convener of this Congress for Pastoral Trainers. I’ve known Ramesh for many years and consider him a dear friend. He recently wrote these kind words: “The primary felt-fear of untrained pastors worldwide arises from having to preach next Sunday. However, the ultimate need of all pastors everywhere is godly character that will support their preaching ministry. Leadership Resources, served by experienced leadership, focuses on training pastors who preach biblically and live Christianly. The dire need for the twin emphases on the public and personal sides of pastoral ministry cannot be exaggerated. LRI, with its track record in training pastors and in training trainers of pastors, especially where Christ’s Church is growing, stands among the most effective organizations in pastoral training today.”

Help with the Practical Needs of Our Global Ministry Center

Untitled1

Dear Partners & Friends,

Enemies are attacking our Global Ministry Center!!!

What an incredible gift this building has been for 19 years, especially to those of us who remember working in Bill & Karen Mills’ dark, damp basement. Our building is now the nerve center for a worldwide pastoral training ministry impacting 40+ countries and many thousands of pastors and churches. It is serving us well, BUT…

Untitled2Two “enemies”, Wear and Tear, have taken a toll on our carpeting. The building still looks new except for our stained, wrinkled, worn carpeting.

The Emerald Ash Borer is our other enemy. These Asian invaders have destroyed all of our ash trees. As you can see in the photos, the trees are standing on their last legs…they’ve got to come down and be replaced…soon!

Screen Shot 2016-07-11 at 8.59.34 AM

Would you help this month by

  • Planting a new tree? $850 would cover removal and replanting of one new tree. We’re asking 6 of you to gift us with a new tree.
  • Replacing carpet? $14,000 would pay for the removal and replacement of 325 square yards of new carpet. At a cost of $43 per square yard, would you gift us 1, 2 or more carpet squares?

I realize that this isn’t as glamorous or exotic as digging a well in Africa or supporting an orphan in Burma, but these are still urgent needs.

As you consider upgrading your home or yard this summer, would you please include these LRI “home improvements” as well, so that our team might focus in the fall on equipping and encouraging pastors around the world to teach God’s Word with God’s heart?

Thank you in advance for your generous support of these very real, very practical needs.

With gratitude for your generosity,

Craig ParroCraig Parro

PS: Even if you can’t afford to plant a whole new tree or carpet a full room, please send a gift which, when combined with others, will get the job done!

A Golden Opportunity for the Word in Cuba

Aug_Cuba 1

Dear Partners & Friends,

“Cuba!” An island in the Caribbean, white sandy beaches, classic cars, the rhythm of rumba and salsa…what comes to mind? Many thoughts. But one that never came to this mind was a visit.

Cuba 2An Unexpected Visit

The times in which we live and the events we experience shape our view of the world. I grew up during the height of the cold war. A trip to Cuba (or Russia) seemed as likely as one to the moon. Yet, this past February, Patricio (LRI Latin America Director) and I boarded a plane to jump the puddle from Monterrey, Mexico to Havana, Cuba.

We walked out of the airport and stepped into what seemed like the set of an old movie. Sun-drenched skies, beautiful palms, classic Chevys, the smell of the sea, each made the experience more surreal. Historic Havana was an interesting mix of architectural influences, American included. It spoke of the power of the Soviet empire yet clearly communicated it was from an era long past, a state of disrepair.

Questions and Answers

Why did our partner invite us? What was the state of the church? What would we find when we met the pastors?

Cuba 3

“Hotel Nacional de Cuba”—Completed in 1930

Answers emerged. MOCLAM (a partner ministry serving in Latin America) invited us to help the church in Cuba. For the past 9 years they had worked with a dozen pastors based in Havana. These 12 have trained 100 more throughout the country. Perfect setup! The training helped them understand the Bible but now MOCLAM felt it was time to strengthen their preaching. The training helped them see Christ as the focus and fulfillment of the Bible’s redemptive story but now it was time to accelerate discipleship and encourage a movement of God’s Word. A match made in heaven! They and we long to see God’s life spread through and mature this country.

The next day we drove to our destination. We spent a few days with these dozen pastors. It was more like a gathering of old friends than a first time meeting of strangers. Welcoming and warm, they were ready to draw us in. Laughter and enthusiasm characterized much of the time. Yet, along the way we also learned that life in Cuba is hard. Ministry is fraught with difficulties, persecution common and poverty acute. The younger generation is fleeing the country in pursuit of the better life. The older one is stuck, nowhere to go and no one to help. Discouragement operates at a level I rarely see. This made them hungry. They craved the unstoppable force that brings hope and life, the Word of God.

Cuba 4

“Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta”—Fortress built from 1589–1630.

A Golden Opportunity

Friends, I don’t know if you see what is unfolding to the south. Relations with Cuba have warmed. U.S. airlines are securing direct flights. The Cuban missile crisis of yesteryear has given way to American Cruise ships today. Investment dollars will soon show up in droves. What does this mean for Cuba? What does this mean for the gospel?

We have a golden opportunity. Three things I know:

  1. This is a moment of historic proportions.
  2. God’s Word and the good news of Jesus is the only power that will make the difference.
  3. We have the invitation and partner to bring the hope and life Cuba desperately needs.

Will you pray and give to help Patricio and his team be able to respond to this call?

With gratitude for your generosity,

Todd Kelly

Director of Global Ministries

PS: The gospel is taking root in Cuba. The most strategic role outsiders can play is to equip pastors to study, teach and preach God’s Word. Your gift this month will enable us to do just that!

Tim Keesee calls TNT “Nation-Shaking” on Dispatches from the Front

Dispatches from the Front with Tim Keesee
A few years ago during a visit to South Sudan to equip pastors in the Training National Trainers program (in partnership with Christian Horizons), Doug Dunton and Pastor Allan Sherer were joined by Dr. Tim Keesee of Frontline Missions International.

Dr. Keesee documented his experience in Episode 5 of the popular missions DVD series Dispatches from the Front. Below is the transcript from the portion mentioning LRI with a few photos. Watch the clip below or see the transcript below.

Screen Shot 2016-08-04 at 9.05.17 PM

Just next door, Allan was rightly dividing the Word of truth. Christian Horizons is not only rescuing children but is also a force in strengthening the Church in the radical rescue work of the Gospel. Intensive Bible training was underway with men and women from all over the region—from elder statesmen like Pastor Ti-yay, who was tortured for his faith during the Communist time, to young men and women eager to learn and to share the Scriptures.

Screen Shot 2016-08-04 at 9.38.58 PM

Some of the pastors have said in the past their only models for preaching were the “health and wealth” types they saw on television—an embarrassing American export. These same men are now getting a taste for simple, solid biblical exposition, and they have publicly repented of how they handled God’s Word before. What is so effective about the teaching that Allan and his colleague Doug are doing is that learning is not for accumulation but for multiplication. Allan and Doug are just the initiators of a movement—for this school has legs! These pastors and evangelists are in turn teaching other pastors and evangelists in ever widening circles of Ethiopians training Ethiopians in Word-centered preaching.

Screen Shot 2016-08-04 at 8.45.59 PMI love to think of the fact that in Acts there’s an Ethiopian searching the Scripture, and the Lord sent along Philip to show him Christ, Whom he embraced in faith and joy. The Ethiopian eunuch surely brought the Gospel back to this very land. Now in our time, God is raising up a new generation of Philips and of Ethiopians hungry to know and preach Jesus—to shake every corner of their nation with the Gospel!

Screen Shot 2016-08-04 at 5.58.02 PM

Dr. Tim Keesee journals his experience with Doug Dunton and our Africa TNTers.

Sat by the Nile yesterday morning beneath a huge mango tree and listened in on Michael and Kebede, his right-hand man, talking ministry strategy with Doug. Kebede is Oromo, he is intense, encyclopedic, and his administrative skills are as sharp and varied as a Swiss Army knife. What is impressive to me is the caliber of leadership among these Ethiopians.

What they are doing here is nation-shaking. Training that moves from generation to generation takes work, focus, mentoring, translators, and logistics. Conferences are easy, but multiplying leaders and overcoming lots of geographic and linguistic barriers isn’t. Here in Sudan they are taking the first steps to equip 1500 church planters who are taking the Gospel across South Sudan and into the Arab North.

5 Ways to Pray for Us

Dear Partners,

I’m calling on our praying friends to seek the Lord with us these days. The opportunities before us are great, but so are the challenges. We desperately need the Lord to lead and provide this summer. Specifically, would you pray regularly for…

  1. Our ministry—equipping pastors around the world to teach God’s Word with God’s heart—is flourishing. Just this year, I’ve told you stories of pastoral transformation… Andre from Ukraine, Xavier from Ecuador, Omar from Honduras, Eshete from Ethiopia. Join us in praising God for the great fruit He is producing!
  2. The rapid expansion we’ve experienced over the past few years (tripling the # of pastors in training) has caused some strains. Our U.S. staff is struggling to shepherd these Movements of the Word. I’m concerned—we’re understaffed. We need more trainers. We need more support and fund-raising staff. Please ask the Lord of the harvest to provide the right people at the right time for us.
  3. Several staff are under-funded. Six have gotten short paychecks over the past few months. Unfortunately, we don’t have a big pool of dollars that we can dip into to make up the difference. Please pray for them… short checks can be so discouraging.
  4. I’ve recently asked Phil Smith to serve as LRI’s Interim Executive Director. Phil is a very talented leader who thinks in terms of building teams, creating healthy processes, and bringing organizational clarity. He’s helping us re-think our structure so that we better fulfill our mission. Pray for Phil… wisdom, strength, and favor with both God and the men and women of LRI.
  5. We’re the best-kept secret around… unfortunately! Pray that the Lord would enable us to get the word out so that more churches, pastors and individuals who have a deep love for the ministry of God’s Word would learn about us, and maybe, partner with us.

Thank you for partnering with us in the spiritual realms!

With much gratitude in Christ,

Craig Parro

President

PS: Although all of these prayer requests are important, “Staff Funding” weighs heaviest on my heart at this time. As you are praying, if the Lord puts it on your heart, would you please respond with a generous gift this month so that we might bless our under-funded staff?

Rejoice in God’s Life-Giving Word this Christmas

Dear Friends & Partners,

Snowflakes dusted Chicagoland this past weekend. These first flurries are always a bit of a shock for me, after a mild, fragrant Midwest autumn. But then, just as suddenly, the snow reminded me of why Leadership Resources exists.

“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” (Isa.55:10-11)

Isaiah 55 shapes our ministry, and we hope that these words shape your life as well.
This year, we’ve seen God’s Word accomplishing God’s purposes as we and our partners equipped and empowered more than 5000 pastors to teach God’s Word with God’s heart, in 40 different countries.

How effective is our ministry? Here’s what one mission researcher said after evaluating our work in Russia:

“Your training is like a slow, soaking rain that softens and saturates the ground over a long period of time.” Like the rain and the snow, His Word always succeeds in accomplishing His work.

Through our partnership with you, together, we bless the nations with the written Word that points to the Living Word, our Lord Jesus Christ.

This Christmas, might you rejoice that 2000 years ago the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, fulfilling all of God’s good purposes in Christ.

Filled with much gratitude,

Craig Parro
President

PS: Would you please remember us in your year-end giving? We’ve been s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d this year financially as we’ve done more ministry on fewer dollars. Your generous gift would help us finish the year strong and begin 2018 with great confidence. Donate here.

31 Days of Prayer for LRI

Rejoice with us!

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you…”
– Zechariah 9:9 (ESV)

Dear Friends and Partners,

The beauty and the greatness of Zechariah’s proclamation rings in my ears at this time of year. This proclamation of hope causes me to rejoice at our Savior’s birth and deepens my desire that all might know Him.

This same hope drives the ministry of Leadership Resources to equip pastors to teach God’s Word with God’s heart that they may share the Good News!

As we reflect on this past year, we rejoice that God has provided opportunities for LRI and our partners to work with key pastors in nearly 50 countries around the world, equipping over 12,000 pastors, transforming their ministries and churches through the power of God’s Spirit-backed Word.

We rejoice that those we continue to train gain confidence to preach God’s Word with God’s heart. We rejoice and pray that as they grow and mature, their ability to equip other pastors and church leaders will increase. By God’s grace, as they equip others, a movement of the Word will flourish.

We rejoice that our team is growing. God continues to bring men and women driven by a passion for God’s Word, a love for those we train, and a longing to see the Word of God flowing powerfully through every church to every nation.

We rejoice and thank God for you. Through your partnership, the nations are blessed with the written Word that points to the Living Word, our Lord Jesus Christ.

This Christmas, may you rejoice that the King has come – that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, fulfilling all of God’s good purposes in Christ.

Rejoicing with you in Christ,

Craig Parro

President

P.S. – As we come to the year end, would you prayerfully consider a special gift? By God’s grace, this ministry continues to grow. Your generous gift would help us finish the year strong and begin 2019 with great confidence!

31 Days of Prayer for LRI

Enjoying Your God in Prayer
Dear Praying Friends and Partners,

We asked you to pray at the beginning of last year. Good news! . . . the Lord has graciously answered your prayers. For example . . .

Last year, you prayed for our staffing needs – a North America regional director, an expanded development department, and critical support staff. Dave DeHaan and Brad Warren joined our development team, and Joe Paglia took over as our North America regional director. Praise God for these provisions.

You prayed for new trainings in the Middle East. We now are able to conduct trainings in three countries in this region. We are still looking for the right partners to launch ongoing pastoral training groups in each. Prayer is still needed!

Precious friends, we covet your prayers! The opportunities before us and our partners are greater than ever, but the challenges are daunting. Entering into 2019, we again invite you to pray with us.

Here are 31 more prayer requests, one for each day of the month. Please pray for . . .

  1. A country in South Asia – key mentor trainers who are leading the movement. Pray for God’s protection over them because of the anti-conversion laws in this country. There have been reports of arrests and fines.
  2. Our team – that God will continue to fuel our sense of total dependence on Him for everything needed for successful ministry.
  3. A restricted-access country – that westerners like LRI workers can still be allowed to come in undetected and not jeopardize the security of the pastors who are being trained.
  4. Ethiopia – that our training would permeate the traditional Ethiopian Church so that ministers are able to properly handle God’s Word in their context.
  5. Our team – for wisdom as we face this question: how much flexibility and adaptability should we allow in our training process?
  6. Brazil – a deepening movement of the Word in churches where pastors often struggle against neo-liberal theology, syncretism, prosperity gospel, and pragmatism.
  7. A restricted-access country – that God would continue to grow His Church in a country that is undergoing great oppression by the government – some are experiencing church closures, imprisonment, and persecution.
  8. Ukraine – for wisdom for our in-country leader as he forms a national training team empowered to lead training throughout the country.
  9. Our team – for wisdom: how much caution or risk should we take as we minister in countries strongly opposed to the gospel?
  10. India – that key leaders there would develop in confidence and competence as mentor trainers for northwest India.
  11. USA – that a movement of God’s Word would develop among the 100 Nepali-Bhutanese pastors/churches in North America.
  12. Ethiopia – for wisdom for Country Director Eshete Belete as he selects 3-5 regional training directors to expand the training within the country.
  13. Our team – Rejoice with us over the many generous partners that the Lord has given to us . . . including many of you!
  14. Europe – for new partner churches to support the expanding work in Europe for 2019 and beyond.
  15. Haiti – for pastors who face heavy spiritual darkness and daily struggles.
  16. Our team – that God will protect the integrity and reputation of LRI by superintending over every spending decision, wherever it is made and whoever it is made by.
  17. Poland – that the Church would be strengthened through our training and that Mateusz Wichary would grow as a leader of the training in Poland.
  18. Russia – that our leadership team would meet the growing desire for training in their nation and organize themselves for expansion.
  19. Uganda – that doors would be open for new training groups in new locations and for the establishment of a strong national training team led by Country Director, Jacques Masiko.
  20. Our team – for wisdom regarding how aggressive or conservative we should be in hiring new staff.
  21. Russia – for God’s favor in obtaining visas so we can enter the country . . . it’s a big problem.
  22. A restricted-access country in Southeast Asia – Praise God that these men are making great strides to exposit the Word and shepherd the people of God with its transforming purpose.
  23. Bangladesh – for wisdom for a third training venue to be launched in 2019 and protection and provision for our 36 pastors being trained in this, the fourth most populous Islamic nation.
  24. Our team – for wisdom in how to be both generous with our national partners and, at the same time, promote local sustainability.
  25. A restricted-access country – for safety of trainees during travel and the time at the training center.
  26. Indonesia – that the mentor trainers become more skilled in training others in expository preaching so that our national leader there is supported by a strong team.
  27. Our team – that the Lord would raise up many new partners who resonate with our mission to equip and encourage pastors around the world to teach God’s Word with God’s heart.
  28. USA – for increased capacity to facilitate additional training groups in North America and wisdom about how to best promote these new groups.
  29. Peru – that God would transform the hearts, minds, and wills of pastors as they study His Word and give them a strong sense of sufficiency in His Word alone.
  30. Our team – for wisdom as we develop a Global Leadership Team to guide the work around the world. How centralized or decentralized should we become?
  31. God – that He be glorified in every training, every conversation, and every decision made by our team and our partners.

So many of these requests admit to our lack of wisdom. Thanks be to God for his invitation and promise in James 1:5: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him” (ESV).

With much confidence in Christ,

Craig Parro

President
